Album Review: fanclubwallet - 'You Have Got To Be Kidding Me'

Updated: May 4, 2023

fanclubwallet is the brainchild of 22 year old singer/songwriter Hannah Judge. Judge should be a familiar face to the bedroom rock scene as she has released numerous Bandcamp singles and EP's over the past two years. People may remember her in particular for her incredible track "Car Crash in G Major" from her 2021 EP Hurt is Boring. Her debut LP You Have Got to Be Kidding Me sees the singer/songwriter at her peak with some infectious new bedroom rock tracks for the masses.

Judge is a great lyricist and is able to put in snarky twists into her lyrics. For example, on "Gr8 Timing" she sings “I deserve to be/with someone who hurts me/So I’ll spend all my time with myself.” The song focuses on breakups and the fact that everyone has their inner jerk. Perhaps what has impressed me most over Judge's career is her ability to bring it all together into a cohesive experience. She also provides a nice mix of stylings for her songs, some where she picks it up such as "Trying to Be Nice" and others where she keeps the melody a bit more mellow such as "Fell Through".

Judge seems to have written this album for those self-reflective moments spent in the quiet when we internalize all the things, both good and bad that are going on in our lives. In other words, this is music you can contemplate to. It just begs to be listened to in one shot. If you're a fan of bedroom rock or pop, you'll surely gravitate towards this release. While Judge has been releasing music for two years now and is an experienced musician, this is still her first full-length. For that, I can say that it's extremely developed, produced, and written. It's an impressive debut.
