Album Review: Jessica Boudreaux - 'The Faster I Run'

When famed indie rock outfit Summer Cannibals disbanded in 2023, we were in shock like many of you. We were wondering what would happen next for the Jessica Boudreaux fronted group. Reportedly, Boudreaux had no thoughts of a solo career and began writing music for films (including the Oscar-nominated Nimona) and TV.

Then we were rocked by the news that Boudreaux had been diagnosed with breast cancer. We followed her journey from afar and hoped for the best for one of our favorite indie rockers. Thankfully, Boudreaux went into remission in the summer of 2023, after which she began a reflective journey. From which came a creative fire to create again, and The Faster I Run was born.

Thematically, The Faster I Run is about embracing the unknown. Something I'm sure we all struggle with in life at some point. Sonically, the album is full of guitar driven tunes that are straight jams. With Boudreaux's signature vocal stylings over top. Is this a Summer Cannibals album? No, there's some experimentation with the melodies that wouldn't fly in that realm, especially on tracks like "Exactly Where You Wanna Be".

This album was developed in an immense amount of turmoil including the aforementioned diagnosis, a breakup and reconciliation, just to name a few life altering events. But Boudreaux stands tall on this one, especially on hooks like you'll find on "Main Character". She sings calmly, but fiercely across the album on this sonic journey she takes the listener on. All I know is that this album is complete from top to bottom. I for one was heartbroken when we lost Summer Cannibals. However, I'm so glad we got music from Boudreaux back in 2024. The world's a fucked up place and it's much better when she's making music in it.
