Album Review: Doug Gillard - ‘Parallel Stride’

Doug Gillard is a legendary guitarist known for his collaboration and work with bands such as Guided by Voices, Nada Surf, Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, and Gem, to name a few! He returned to his solo work this year with the release of Parallel Stride!
The album is downright a winner with its hypnotic melodies and catchy hooks. I want to call special attention to Gillard’s vocals on this effort, as he’s mainly known as a multi instrumentalist, especially on guitar. However, Gillard can do it all. His vocals are reserved, but pitch perfect, and they pair well with his melodies which are pure gold, as always!
The album kicks off with “Face of Smiles” which is a traditional rock and roll track, which features some slightly effects driven guitar and solid percussion. This one is absolutely killer, and I loved how Gillard’s vocals which work so well with the rhythm. “Yes She Loves Me” is another winner that features some cool highs, which at points remind me of Johnny Marr style guitar work if you’re looking for a comp. But don’t get it twisted, this type of instrumental play is what Gillard is known for. The solos are so awesome on this one as well. My favorite track is “She Showed Me the Earth”, which is just begs you to move along to the beat.
Gillard’s first solo LP in over ten years fires on all cylinders and is can’t miss stuff. Especially if you’re fans of his other work, or just love good rock and roll.
