Hey all! It's Maria and I've got a great group of artists from around the indie genre that I've been into this week. Check it out!
Rock - Arctic Monkeys
Formed in 2002, the Arctic Monkeys began making music in England and quickly gained popularity in 2003 when they were giving out a collection of their demos called Beneath the Boardwalk. Since then, the Arctic Monkeys have released 6 studio albums and are currently finishing up their latest tour for their album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. The new album was released earlier this year in May 2018. Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino features the singles “Four Out of Five” and “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino”. Their album AM (2013) included some of their best-known songs, including “Do I Wanna Know?”, “R U Mine?”, and “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?”
Folk - Ben Howard
Ben Howard has been composing and producing his own music for a little over a decade. His first EP, Games in the Dark, was released in 2008, followed by These Waters (2009) and Old Pine (2010). After releasing his 2nd studio album, I Forget Where We Were (2014), Howard joined with another band, A Blaze of Feather, in 2017. Despite this new project, he just released his 3rd studio album, Noonday Dream, in 2018.
Pop - Aurora Aksnes
Aurora Aksnes is perhaps best known for her cover of “Half the World Away”. The single was released on her album All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend in 2016. The album also featured her singles “Runaway”, “Running with the Wolves”, and “I Went Too Far”. She has released 2 EPs, Running with the Wolves (2015) and Infections of a Different Kind (Step 1) (2018).
R&B - DVSN
The Canadian duo DVSN got their big break in 2015 when their single “With Me” was picked up by Apple’s Beats 1 radio. The following year, the duo was featured in the song “Faithful” on Drake’s album, Views. In 2016, they also released their first studio album, Sept. 5. In October 2017, they released their 2nd studio album, Morning After, which featured the singles “Think About Me” and “Don’t Choose”. DVSN has been on their Morning After tour this year, but I anticipate more music headed our way in the near future.
Electronic
CHVRCHΞS was founded in Scotland by Lauren Mayberry, Iain Cook and Martin Doherty in 2011. In 2013, they released their EP, Recover, which featured their singles “The Mother We Share” and “Recover”. They have released 3 studio albums in addition to the EP. The newest album, Love is Dead, was released in May 2018, and included a handful of singles: “Get Out”, “My Enemy”, Never Say Die”, and “Miracle”. They recently performed at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October 2018.
Stay tuned next week to see what I've been listening to from around the Indie genre!
