Alex Heflin & the Moot Point is indisputably my favorite local band in Morgantown, WV. In a town with an insane number of incredible neotrad and folk musicians and bands, the Moot Point stands out for their eclectic jazz funk spin on original tunes, as well as their cover of “You’re Still the One” (Shania Twain) and other beloved household name songs. Their sound, comprised of a tenor electric guitar (Alex Heflin), bass guitar (Mason Atha), electric keys (Ryan Quickel), and drum kit (Jonah Henthorne), is smooth like a glass of whiskey after a long day and whimsical like the first visit from the ice cream truck in your childhood neighborhood in early summer.
The Moot Point was in fine form on May 24th, 2026 when they headlined The Purple Fiddle in Thomas, WV. Their live sets are best described as music that makes you want to dance and that would likely give you a headache if you tried to figure out each song’s time signature. The show was kicked off by The Moot Point’s version of Alex Heflin’s “Guest Room” off of his 2021 record Room for Everyone. Each member’s commitment to the music and their locked-in collaboration as a band is what makes The Moot Point so electrifying to watch perform. There was pure joy on Heflin’s face and in his chuckle when the band hit a particularly fun chord change. That joy was mirrored in the dance movements and facial expressions of his bandmates. The crowd was equally inspired to dance and move as the music directed them. Life is hard and complex like a weird key change or time signature, but it can also be light and fun, like a delicate keys riff or a funky bass line. The Moot Point walks this line beautifully, making intricate music for people without Master’s degrees in jazz performance.
