Album Review: Rainbow Body - ‘Rainbow Body’

Supergroup Rainbow Body are dropping their self-titled debut this week! Rainbow Body are Taylor and Griff Goldsmith (Dawes), Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Eric Krasno, Ross James, and Adam MacDougall, with special guests Oteil Burbridge and Nicki Bluhm. The record was Recorded in Iceland, and gets going right from the start with the energetic “Strange Memory”, which features some cool indie style guitar work. I absolutely loved the leads on this track, it’s a great way to start the record.
“From Mirror Lake” shifts gears a bit, with some acoustic, pedal steel, and leads that evoked comps to the “Jessica” by the Allman Brothers. Taylor Goldsmith’s distinct vocals carry this one when accompanied by the melody. I also enjoyed the acoustic and electric solos on this one. “Blade Runner on the Big Screen” features another great selection of effects driven leads, along with some organ work that make the melody feel warm.
“So Many Words” was my favorite track on the album, and its pedal steel was arresting. The duet vocals was a nice change of pace, especially when they harmonized. The record closes with “Kicking Over the Traces”, which clocks in just over eight minutes. The lead guitar work was again the star for me, as it has a tinge of psychedelic oriented sounds and there were also some cool vocal harmonies in here as well.
If you’re a fan of any of the bands this supergroup is made of, you’ll love this one. Even if you aren’t familiar, the leads, melodies, and vocals are a bit of a throwback (in a good way), that doesn’t drown everything in a bunch of autotune.
Rating - 7.5/10
