Album Review: We Are Scientists - Lobes

Updated: May 3, 2023

Indie rock favorites We Are Scientists return with their eight studio LP titled Lobes this Friday! LOBES serves as a follow-up to their 2021 release Huffy. When discussing the two albums, vocalist/guitarist Keith Murray said via press release "We consider Huffy our daytime record – it’s an upbeat rock album designed to soundtrack jet ski rides to the Bahamas and piña colada in aquamarine-tiled Jacuzzis. Our new album, Lobes, however, is our nighttime album. As the first song on the record, ‘Operator Error’ soundtracks that moment when you realize that all of those tiki cocktails you started drinking at 11:00am are going to give you a wicked hangover by sunset, and so your best bet is to just keep the party going, consequences be damned!”

Murray could not hit the nail more on the head with his assessment of Lobes. The rhythms have a cool sensibility to them that make you want to dance the night away. The vocals are laid delicately over top of the rhythm (some even featuring some reverb) such as on the track "Dispense with Sentiment". While We Are Scientists have become known for their indie guitar rhythms, they venture a bit on this album even introducing some synth work that when coupled with heavy bass hits just right.

What's clear is that Lobes is an album that reminds this listener of long nights of going out with friends and seeing what trouble they could raise. We think that you'll find Lobes to be an easy listen that has no skips and is filled to the brim with great hooks. We Are Scientists have not disappointed us over their career and they continue that high bar of success with this album. Give it a listen for some indie rock goodness.
