Album Review: The Strokes - ‘Reality Awaits’

Julian Casablancas and his band The Strokes have always embodied the rock and roll essence. Is This It and Room on Fire helped define an era, shaping the soundtrack for countless early 2000’s alt rock fans. Their sharp songwriting and effortless style left an enduring mark on a generation of music lovers.

The band's newest venture, Reality Awaits, sounds like it comes from an entirely different group than fans have known and loved for more than two decades. Casablancas' typically velvety vocals are heavily processed, layered with Auto-Tune and vocoder effects on nearly every track. The result is a dramatic departure from the raw, effortless cool that helped define the band's earlier work, creating a sound that may surprise longtime listeners expecting the familiar swagger of Is This It or Room on Fire.

Lyrically, Reality Awaits has its moments.

“Falling Out of Love” stands out as the album’s strongest track from a songwriting perspective, showcasing the introspective and emotionally resonant lyricism Casablancas is capable of. However, the song — and much of the record — is weighed down by the heavy vocal processing. If Casablancas had peeled back the layers of distortion and let his recognizable voice take center stage, the album’s most powerful lyrics could have landed with far greater emotional impact. For long-time fans, the disconnect between the strength of writing and the detached, computerized delivery may prove frustrating.

If you are looking to fill a nostalgic void, Reality Awaits is not The Strokes record for you. Rather than revisiting the band’s signature sound, the record embraces experimentation and modern production techniques, at the expense of qualities that made fans fall in love with The Strokes in the first place. While Reality Awaits may appeal to listeners interested in hearing Casablancas push his artistic boundaries, it’s unlikely to satisfy those searching for a return to the band’s classic form.
