Album Review: Seether - 'The Surface Seems So Far'

When you think of the band Seether, your first thought is enigmatic rock anthems. This band just has a knack for staying relevant in an ever-changing rock/metal scene because their music is truly different than what else is out there. They're out there doing the same thing with the release of their latest LP The Surface Seems So Far. When I think of Seether, I think of hooks, like all day long. This band knows how to build to a fantastic chorus. They're one of the best bands in hard rock at doing this. It's so present on this album with singles such as "Judas Mind". This track takes the listener on a musical ride that includes melodic vocals, dynamic guitar work, and harsh metal vocals stylings.

The second single on the album "Illusion" lines right up after "Judas Mind" as a great opening one-two punch. "Illusion" combines ethereal, effects laden vocals, driving guitars, and lead vocalist/guitarist Shaun Morgan's signature growl.

The Surface Seems So Far is the band's first release since 2020's Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum (which itself produced three No. 1 tracks). What I've always loved about Seether is their versatility. They are not afraid to slow it down as they do on "Beneath the Veil" (that is, until a chorus that hits like a sledgehammer). The band similarly combines slowed down tones with driving distorted guitar work on the banger "Try to Heal". What's clear from The Surface Seems So Far is that Seether hasn't lost a step since the pandemic and they're here as they always were.
