Album Review: Odette - ‘Blink’

Odette is the moniker of Sydney-based musician Georgia Sallybanks, who returns with her latest Blink everywhere this Friday! Blink represents the follow up to Odette’s groundbreaking sophomore LP Herald (2021). The musical choices on Blink are simply suberb. Whether it’s chunky guitar melodies on “Are You Really Having Fun?” or piano-driven rhythms on “Watch Me Go”, Odette makes all the right moves.
One thing that really stood out to me were Sallybanks’ vocals. There are moments on Blink where she’s in a spoken word mode, then she’ll pivot to a pitch perfect falsetto, to more fullbodied vocals. Her vocals are so full and rich and I especially loved how they paired with piano accompaniment. I’d be remiss if I didn’t shout out the absolutely killer guitar work on “Gills”. It matches up so well with the intricate piano on the track and Odette’s vocals are sung almost in a round, which makes for a heady experience.
Blink also represents Odette’s first release since breaking away from a major label and becoming an independent artist. In an era where more artists are taking back control of their careers, I have to applaud her here. The instrumentation is so intricate, especially the piano work. Simply put, Blink is a fourteen track tour de force that shouldn’t be missed.
