Album Review: Girlhood - ‘This Will Make Sense in the End’

UK two-piece Girlhood is back with their fourth LP, This Will Make Sense in the End, which also represents the band’s first time working together in the same room! The duo blend elements of alt and R&B that is catchy and begs you to move along to the beat. Natalie Holmes vocals are so pure and her songwriting is layered and complex (in all the right ways), when paired with melodies that that Christian Pinchbeck anchors, the bad brings a hell a lot of soul to their sound. On Holmes’ songwriting, she brings in a world of food to describe a relationship, it’s inspiring stuff as the singer-songwriter admits she has a complex relationship with food.

One of my favorite tracks on record is “Straight to the Bar”, the vocals are once again dynamic and the melody is sugary sweet. I loved the sax that accompanied the melody, as it blended so well with the duo’s soulful pop sound. “Silver Lining” was another winner for me, where Girlhood is bringing in elements soul, R&B, and indiepop. I mentioned the melodies earlier, the record began as an experiment with old soul samples, but it moved way beyond that as a finished product.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention “Born Hungry”. The piano is beautiful and the vocals from Holmes is so full, it’s like listening to a tube amp, it’s that warm in its sound. This Will Make Sense in the End is downright a gorgeous listen. I can only imagine how it plays on a vinyl, as the it was fantastic digitally. Give this one a listen you won’t be mad.
