Album Review: Jim James - ‘Wowed Out’

Three time GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter Jim James, founding member of My Morning Jacket is back with his first solo LP in eight years! Wowed Out drops this Friday on one of our favorite labels, ATO Records. One of the foremost musicians in the psychedelic scene today, James has returned with his signature brand of soulful sounds on this one.

Wowed Out represents the fifth solo LP for the Kentucky native. James leads the way with the first single “Come Again”, a heady, well-paced track that focuses on resiliency in the face of adversity and chaos, appropriate for this day and age to say the least. It features some great, easy going guitar work, particularly on the solo that comes in around the 3:00 minute mark.

Wowed Out was produced entirely by James, and the title is from a term the multi-instrumentalist uses when discussing sensory overload. Recorded in the fall of 2025, it began in earnest after James began sorting through some recordings in which he collaborated with Brian Reitzell (who is known for his work and collaboration with Sofia Coppola on films Lost in Translation and The Virgin Suicides to name a few). On the process of this one, James was quoted in press release as saying: “For years I kept returning to all this music we’d made and couldn’t figure out what to do with it…But for some reason, last year everything started flowing in a really beautiful way”.

We were absolutely blown away by “Home (Green)”, a banger of a track that comes in midway through the record and clocks in at just under eight minutes. It’s deliberately paced and features James’ signature vocals over a palate of gentle guitar and keys. The guitar in this one is again tremendous and the sonic landscape James is able to achieve here reminds us of Pink Floyd at the height of their powers. Thematically, James also contentdswith the rise to technology no this one. James is quoted as saying “We’re surrounded by all this technology that’s supposed to be so world-changing and amazing, but a lot of the time it just leaves people feeling disconnected”.

We also appreciated “Whole Heart (Into It)” which comes in the back third of the record. It moves along well at an even pace, while James pairs his vocals with some highs and well timed percussion. The song, like much of the album is paced extremely well and takes the listener on a journey of sorts. James wraps things up with “Your Door”, a methodically moving tune, which is great to just put on and drift away to. Wowed Out is a winner from start to finish, with easy going psych sounds and well thought out themes and musical magic.
