Album Review: Dawes - 'Oh Brother'

Dawes dropped their ninth LP Oh Brother on October 11, 2024. We wanted to take some time to reflect on the album a month (or so) out from it's release. This release marked a stylistic leap for the California alt band. After the amicable departure of two band members and the release of 2022's Misadventures of Doomscroller, founding members Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith are moving onward and upward.

The album was recorded live with just Taylor on vocals and guitar with Griffin on drums initially. They'd eventually be joined by touring guitarist Trevor Menear. Despite the loss of personnel, Oh Brother has the familiar trappings of what we have come to love about Dawes. The same folksy, laid back rhythms, and vocals that just beg for you to sing along to them.

Our favorite track on the record had to be "Still Strangers Sometimes" because it is so easy to jam to. Though we'll have to be honest, the guitar work on "Surprise!" is great too. What's clear is that despite personnel moves or whatever comes their way, Dawes will put out great work. That's evidence by their work on Oh Brother.
