Album Review: Switchfoot - ‘Forever Now’

I have been listening to Switchfoot since before I can remember. My dad is a huge fan and always had it playing in the car. As I grew up I developed my own appreciation for their music and for frontman Jon Foreman’s songwriting, particularly favoring their 1999-2005 era. It is rare for a band’s work to hold up across decades, and even rarer for a collection of musicians to continue producing art that reflects the core meaning that began their careers almost thirty years later. Switchfoot’s creative longevity is proven in their new record Forever Now.
Forever Now sounds like the lovechild of The Beautiful Letdown, Vice Verses, and Where The Light Shines Through. The high energy and motivated lyrics makes me feel like I’m in high school again, fully alive and deeply connected to my values. “YFWYA” is my favorite from the record. It’s upbeat and lively, and the lyrics remind the listener of their inherent worth. “Two Twins” show off Switchfoot’s songwriting in all of its hilarity and insight. I have my own interpretations about the lyrics, but I think it’s more fun to leave lyrical meaning to the ear of the beholder. The overall theme of the record is heavy with musings about life, death, and meaning, outfitted by crunchy overdrive and a rhythm section that sounds like it was inspired by a sweaty summer spent camping out at a music festival with your childhood friends. I loved this record, and I can’t wait for all of my friends who love Switchfoot to hear it.
