We had the opportunity to interview Black Match, who just released their fantastic single "Cover Your Eyes"! It's available on all streaming services and well worth your time. Before you go listen to it though, check out our interview with Black Match!
1. How did you come to pursue music, how long have you been at it and when did you decide to go “all in” with music? How have your lives changed since you made that decision?
We have been playing music together since we were 12, but didn’t start pursuing music professionally until over a decade later. We met a producer from LA and decided to record our songs and really give music a shot. We have been lucky to work with some amazing people and have been able to connect with people from all over the world through our music.
2.Could you walk us through your process of writing music?
We try to let each song live and breathe on its own and dig through what pops out to us when we listen and think back. Sometimes we write a song inspired by a conversation and other times it’s more focused on a mood or lyrical idea that we want to explore. We often talk through some heavy subjects while together, and those are almost always the basis of our songs.
3. What artists have inspired you in your career?
We love to listen to all types of music and have really been fans of some legends before we even considered pursuing music. To name a few people that we love: James Vincent McMorrrow, Matt Corby, Adele, Foy Vance.
4. Do you have any favorite music gear (guitar, amps, effects pedals, keyboards, etc.) that you love to use? If so, what’s the story on them?
We have a couple different pieces of gear we use often for our sound. Hannah has an older mini-acoustic that we’ve been writing on for a long time, it’s nothing too special, just a nice brightly-toned acoustic that we always incorporate. There’s also a guitar pedal by Digitech that does a reverse reverb, which lays awesome groundwork for an emotional song while we write. We use a ton of stuff by one of our favorite audio companies TrueTone, whose pedals and gear always sound amazing.
5. Can you describe the vibe at your live shows? Also, what do you enjoy most about a venue when you do a show?
We attempt to have our live shows be an experience in which you can listen and reflect. There’s typically not a lot of physical movement, and instead of being in your face with our performance, we usually turn the lights low and let the music control the night. We hope it’s an experience that is emotional and at the same time refreshing.
6. What is one thing that you want the public to know about your music?
Our main hope with our music is that the lyrics speak to those in a hard place. While we love the production and recording process, the base of our intent of writing is to share thoughts and experiences and to connect through some of the harder times we all experience.
7. Do you have any upcoming projects you would like fans to know about?
Having just released our fifth single, we are working on compiling much more of our music in a full-length album, in which fans can hear the music they know plus many more new tracks. We are also working on touring and places to play live, so if you have a city you would like us to come to definitely let us know!
