Artist Spotlight - The Deep Dark Woods

We had the chance to interview The Deep Dark Woods, who have a sound that is rooted in folk and Americana stylings, which has garnered them a pretty significant following in the alt scene. The Deep Dark Woods are Ryan Boldt, Geoff Hilhorst, and Evan Cheadle. The music often examines dark themes and subjects like floods and ghosts. The group is currently based out of Saskatchewan, Canada. If you're into roots music, you have got to check these guys out! And of course check out our interview with them below!

1. How did you come to pursue music and how long have you been at it?

"My parents bought me a guitar when I was 11 years old, my grandma showed me how to play country music, from there I wanted to play music for a living".

2. Could you walk us through your process of writing music?

"It depends on the day and the place, sometimes I write words first, other times I write the music and add the words later".

3. What artists have inspired you in your career?

"Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Stanley Brothers, Pete Dello, Gordon Lightfoot".

4. Do you have any favorite music gear (guitars, amps, effects pedals, keyboards, etc.) that you love

to use? If so, what’s the story on them?

"My 1968 Gretsch Nashville. It was given to me by my good friend Jody Weger. It's the only electric guitar I'll use".

5. Can you describe the vibe at your live shows? Also, what do you enjoy most about a venue when

you do a show?

"We're highly influenced by the music of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, so, we like to extend the songs. It makes it much more interesting for us as a band. Playing the songs the exact same way every night can get boring. I enjoy good sound, if the sound isn't right it makes it hard to perform your best".

6. What is one thing that you want the public to know about your music?

"It can be pleasurable to listen to sad songs".

7. Do you have any upcoming projects you would like fans to know about?

"I've nearly completed an album of gospel songs, dedicated to my grandmother who passed away a couple years back. Most of the songs on the record she used to sing to me when I was a kid".
