Dorset, UK 2-5 August 2018.
For British music lovers summer means one thing: festivals. 2018 is a rest year for Glastonbury, but just because the most iconic is taking a break, there is still loads of amazing live music to be enjoyed across our sun-frazzled nation this August. Over the next few days we’ll be letting you know what not to miss at the big summer festivals.
One of the more fun and diverse of the big hitters is Bestival which starts next week at the Lulworth Estate in Dorset. This year’s theme is “Circus” and since a big part of Bestival is getting into the spirit of the occasion, roll up for our pick of the acts to check out when you are not busy perfecting your fancy dress or attending disco yoga;
London Grammar headline the Castle stage on Saturday night, a setting their thoughtful and uplifting beats are surely made for. If you like Florence and the Machine this will be a perfect way to end your Saturday night. With both the incomparable Grace Jones and the chilled out almost country vibe of First Aid Kit also here on Saturday night, you’d be forgiven for getting your spot here early in the day and not moving until sunrise.
On Sunday, be sure to catch Plan B, the biggest breakout star of the London grime scene in recent years. For something completely different check out Chaka Demus & Pliers, the reggae duo were huge here in the 1990s and they are sure to provide a fun soundtrack to the blazing sunshine.
The Big Top
We Are Scientists will light up the Big Top stage on Sunday night, but I’m actually most excited about Elvana. They may be low down the pecking order in a Friday afternoon slot but how can you resist Nirvana songs sung by an Elvis impersonator? They are exactly what Bestival is all about.
HMS Bestival / Club Dada / Bollywood
While DJ sets may not truly be in the remit of AltRevue, one of the best things about festivals is being able to wander around to the different tents and stages and dip in and out of musical styles you wouldn’t normally listen to. Saturday sees both Faithless and So Solid Crew take to the decks of HMS Bestival, both are masters of their genres. You can also catch Goldie on Friday in the Bollywood tent and on Saturday Club Dada plays host to a reggae set from comedian Vic Reeves which is sure to be brilliant.
Non-musical highlights we are excited for include, a trapeze school, a 10,000 ball ballpit, the magic teapot and YoGangster because who doesn’t want to take a yoga class with Goldie?
