Soundtrack Review: Son Lux - ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’

Bandfam Son Lux are at it again with another soundtrack fresh on the heels of the drop of their stellar new LP Out Into! Already veterans of this game, having created an Oscar nominated soundtrack for Everything Everywhere all at Once as well as Marvel’s Thunderbolts. The band is back with new one for Mahershala Ali’s new film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.

Son Lux is a three piece featuring Rafiq Bhatia, Ian Chang, and Ryan Lott. The band once again challenges conventional notions of songwriting with this effort and made my head turn throughout the effort. While I haven’t had the opportunity to the film as of yet, the score certainly showed that there will be no shortage of drama and action. The score is mainly instrumental, but does feature some vocalization spots throughout.

My favorite track on the score was “Milk” which came halfway through the soundtrack and featured dynamic vocalization portions and some great (to use my favorite term) sonic landscaping. The band uses a myriad of instrumentation throughout the effort, but the hero of the day for me had to be the percussion work. It pushes a sense of urgency in all the right places which stressed the dramatic nature and suspense which is sure to be in the film. I’m interested to see how this score will pair up with the Ali vehicle, as it already had me hook line and sinker.

Rating - 8.5/10
