Album Review: Michigander - ‘Over Before You Know It’

Alternative mainstay Michigander’s new record Over Before You Know It drops this Friday everywhere you get music! Over Before You Know It represents Michigander’s sophomore full-length album and continues the band’s strong string of indie goodness. Coming in at ten tracks, Over Before You Know It is a breath of fresh air. The record features dynamic instrumentation (especially the guitar work on “YYY”!) accompanied by singer/songwriter Jason Singer’s signature vocals.

Thematically, Singer is one that isn’t afraid from tackling the difficult topics. On this one, Singer ponders the ins and outs of navigating life’s ups and downs. Sometimes, this can be presented in upbeat melodies that make you want to move, such as those on “Freaking Out”. However, Singer and Co. aren’t afraid of slowing things a bit and stripping them down, such as on “Let Go of You”. The track features scorching guitar, over a chill melody, and is topped perfectly with vocals from Singer. We would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the great work the band puts forth on “Outlive”. The percussion on the track reminds of something from The National, Singer’s vocals soar here when accompanied by some great highs on the guitar.

Michigander are one of our favorite acts on the scene currently. Not only do Singer and Co. make unparalleled indie tunes, but they also are not afraid to use their platform for good. Whether it be tackling issues that are pressing in the political landscape or calling out some of the bullshit that takes place in the music industry, you can always count on Singer and Co. to tell it like it is. Michigander will be embarking on a tour to support the record. The tour also included a stop in Detroit supporting Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s The People v. The Powerful last week.

Over Before You Know It features dynamic tempo and introspective lyrics. The record is a real winner for Singer and Co. and we’re excited for you to hear it!
