Album Review - L.A. Exes: Get Some (August 20, 2021)

Queer surf/pop-rock group L.A. Exes are coming with their debut album Get Some, which drops this Friday. The album is full of banging melodies, colorful lyrics, and dynamic vocals, we'll say it's not a release for the prudish. The group is comprised of Jenny Owen Youngs, Sam Barbera (Beginners), Rachel White, and Steph Barker.

While they are direct in their approach, L.A. Exes have something to say. They're all in on relationships and one's place in the world. Regarding their track "Temporary Goodbye", the band stated “Temporary Goodbye” is about that feeling you get when the world is stomping on you, and you just want to hit the eject button so you can catch your breath. "Temporary Goodbye" is a high point on the album and it makes sense why it was selected as a single. However, our favorite moment on the album was the opening lyric of "Baby Let's Pretend". It states "I'm not really convinced you want to fuck him". The song is a hilarious track about stealing a woman away from her boyfriend. Another favorite moment for us on the album was L.A. Exes inclusion of a cover of one of our favorite songs from the Cranberries, "Linger". It's a very well done rendition and is definitely worth your time if you're a fan.

If I had one word to describe Get Some, it would be fun. The album is so bright and fun that it juxtaposes the current world we're living in of doom and gloom. So if you're looking for a respite from the dumpster fire that is our state of affairs today, look no further than Get Some. It's an album that can really take the edge off if you let it.
