Album Review: Dummy - ‘do you love the color of the sky?’

What is clear is that if you spend five seconds speaking to Dummy about music is that they are intentional in every choice they make musically. This shows through immensely on their latest effort do you love the color of the sky? And while the band insists they created this record with an emphasis on spontaneity, this much goodness simply can’t happen by chance.
Thematically, the record takes on the tough issues of our time including climate change (“April Limosuine”) and the rise of AI and it’s degradation of critical thinking and creativity (lead single “Full Spectrum Dominance”). Dummy have created a record that is not only accessible sonically, but beautifully complex in nature. Its use of electronic melody is simply masterful and unlike anything I’ve heard in the genre since perhaps Radiohead’s In Rainbows.
The combination of Joe Trainor’s guitar, Alex Ewell’s percussion, and vocals from keyboardist Emma Maatman and guitarist Nathan O’Dell are next level. I especially loved the band’s use of pause and highs in “Song of Mana”. Maatman’s vocals soar above a moving melody of synth and beats that beg you to move your body. Simply put, do you love the color of the sky? is a winner through and through.
