Album Review - CHAI: WINK (May 21, 2021)

Japanese four-piece CHAI, which is comprised of identical twins MANA (lead vocals and keys) and KANA (guitar), drummer YUNA, and bassist-lyricist YUUKI are back with their new album WINK. CHAI continues their tradition of sugary sweet alt-pop sounds and whimsical lyrics. On their collaboration piece that features Ric Wilson, "Maybe Chocolate Chips" YUUKI describes her moles as chocolate chips in an effort for others to view their own moles in a more positive perspective.

In the middle of the album CHAI go a little retro with the more electronically styled "PING PONG! (which features an appearance by YMCK). While much of the album is dynamic, it does have some slower tracks. "Wish Upon A Star" was written as a type of lullaby. Specifically, YUUKI wondered "What kind of song would I want to listen to before I go to sleep at night", "Wish Upon A Star" was the end result of this query. While it certainly is slower, it still feels like a pop song. The album closes "Salty" which musically reminds more of a lullaby. While CHAI's latest may be a little too sweet for some, I think it's a good blend of alt-pop that hits when it needs to and can be a bit laid back as well.
