We had the opportunity to interview alt-pop duo Cardiac Half for an Artist Spotlight feature! They just dropped a new single called "City Lights". But before you check that out, be sure to read our interview first!
1. How did you come to pursue music and how long have you been at it?
"Music runs in the family, and so at a young age, we started taking private lessons and we were even “performing” as early as two years old. Of course, we use that term loosely as we weren’t prodigies or anything like that. Our mom and her parents travelled around the southeast doing Gospel music, and every so often, they’d put us on stage to sing a song and get us used to performing in front of people."
2. Could you walk us through your process of writing music?
"Dylan and I do co-write songs together on occasion, but I write the music most of the time. Sometimes I’ll start with a chord progression and develop a melody from that, then I’ll work on the lyrics. It really just depends on the song. They say if you get stuck and your process isn’t working, try switching it up a little and start in a different place."
3. What artists have inspired you in your career?
"Our influences include Twenty One Pilots, 5 Seconds of Summer, and Maroon 5 among others. There are also lesser known artists that have shaped us over the years like Falling Up, Knox Hamilton, and Relient K to name a few. We try and listen to different artists, even those outside of our genre, for inspiration as well."
4. Do you have any favorite music gear (guitars, amps, effects pedals, keyboards, etc.) that you love to use? If so, what’s the story on them?
"I love all things Nord, even though I can’t afford most of their products. I also use Logic Pro X and Mainstage patches for tracks and things like that. Dylan rocks an Orange bass head on stage. We’re not crazy gear heads or anything—as long as it sounds good, we’re good."
5. Can you describe the vibe at your live shows? Also, what do you enjoy most about a venue when you do a show?
"We like to have fun at shows, and we like it when everyone else does too. Nothing beats when the crowd is engaged and singing along. We also enjoy meeting people and hanging out afterwards."
6. What is one thing that you want the public to know about your music?
"We’re obviously a little biased, but I really believe we have some catchy music that’s worth listening to. We work hard with a great producer, and I think the quality of music we make can compete with the best of the best. And we’re all about lyrics with hidden or double meanings, so don’t just take the words at face value. We want to tell a story with our songs, and we want people to share in that story with us."
7. Do you have any upcoming projects you would like fans to know about?
"Currently, we’re in the process of writing and shooting some really cool, cinematically styled music videos for our next several singles. We wanted to do something different, and we’re stoked about it. Can’t wait to finish the project and share it with everyone."
