Concert Review - San Juan Underground - 2/2/19

San Juan Underground - The Exchange - 2/2/2019

We saw San Juan Underground at The Exchange in Corpus Christi, Texas on 2/2/19. The relaxing venue of The Exchange was the perfect venue for San Juan Underground's jazz/blues hybrid style. San Juan Underground had a nice long set going from about 9:00pm to 1:00am with a couple of breaks thrown in where the audience got to know their sound well. In their set, San Juan Underground had a mixture of instrumental jazz and blues jams, some covers of popular songs, and a couple of originals.

Musically, San Juan Underground are experts at their craft, having multi-instrumentalists all over their three-piece group. They have multiple members that can call the direction of the song, which is really cool to see. Some of the highlights of the night included a fantastic cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" that absolutely gripped the audience. Also, San Juan Underground's amazing cover of "No Diggity" had the crowd moving.

Overall, San Juan Underground played about fourteen to fifteen tracks in their set with each track being tight, with solid guitar lines, prominent bass, and jazz drums. When vocals were utilized, they were absolutely dynamic, especially when harmonized with other members in the band. I was happy to be joined by members of Voodoo Logic who took in the show with me, Corpus Christi has a dynamic group of local musicians and I'm glad to highlight them.
