Behind the Lyrics: Misterwives - "Superbloom"

Updated: May 3, 2023

With all the shit in the media and news lately, Spotify must have been feeling my down mood, or ya know, the FBI got concerned by my loud blasting of Rage Against the Machine. Haha.

No matter how it happened -- Spotify randomly picked this song for me, and I love it so, so much. I had to share it with you all because well, it is time for YOU to "Superbloom". Let's dig in.

"Superbloom" - Misterwives

Resilient little thing, just like mama made you

No one needs to save you

Ah-na-na, ah-na-na, ah-na-na

Wallflower in the spring

Oh, they can't contain you

Through the cracks, you break through

Ah-na-na, ah-na-na, ah-na-na

I deserve congratulations

'Cause I came out the other side

I've been having revelations

And I'm gon' let them shine

I deserve congratulations

I'd never thought that I'd survive

If you tell me I won't make it

That's when I, that's when I

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

Resilient little thing, just like mama raised you

So you got that wildfire in your soul

Don't you ever let it go

Make it burn so bright that they all know

I deserve congratulations

'Cause I came out the other side

I've been having revelations

And I'm gon' let them shine

I deserve congratulations (thank you)

I'd never thought that I'd survive

If you tell me I won't make it

That's when I, that's when I

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

Never rained in the desert 'til I

Picked me for the very first time

It's darkest before the sunrise

That's when I-

Never rained in the desert 'til I

Picked me for the very first time

It's darkest before the sunrise

That's when I

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

I deserve congratulations

'Cause I came out the other side

I've been having revelations

And I'm gon' let them shine

I deserve congratulations

Never thought that I'd survive

If you tell me I won't make it

That's when I, that's when I

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom, superbloom

Superbloom (yeah, I deserve congratulations)

Superbloom ('cause I came out the other side)

Superbloom (if you tell me I won't make it)

Superbloom (that's when I-)

I know in previous articles I have discussed the importance of anthems, and that is because many times, we write lyrics when we are sad or angry, which is great, but you know what else we need? Happiness -- and not just the Pharell Williams song we do not speak of in name. Haha.

But, how do we do this in an original way? This is what I want to focus on tonight. Brainstorming tips!

First, think of the interests you have as a person. Make a list. It doesn't matter how random they get. It is the process that matters.

Next, pick one that you are feeling in the moment. Now, some of you may be thinking -- listen, here, this is a lot of "feeling". I am not comfortable with that. I hate to say it, but in order to be a good song writer you got to get in tune with those feelings.

Next, if you start writing and feel stuck or not feeling it, try another. You have a whole list.

Now, with "Superbloom", what do you think their interest was? Plants, flowers, dessert environment? Maybe all the above? The next thing they had to decide was how to connect that with the happiness emotion they were feeling. Don't worry about connecting with everyone. That is impossible, but it is possible to connect if your emotions are real.

By comparing themselves with the plants, we see the metaphor of us growing like plants. And like plants, sometimes, you have to put yourself first to bloom. It takes a lot of energy and effort, but it is so worth it.

So, my challenge to you -- brainstorm. Think of ways to compare your favorite things to an emotion. If you get stuck, go to your favorite artists and listen with this in mind. You'll be surprised by what you hear.

Until next time.
